UX &UI LECTURER

Simplify the user interface and experience to find online success

Teaching how to design a mobile app or a website is pretty much like teaching Digital Marketing. We tend to think that students who are part of the social media generation would know how to keep things simple. The reality is actually far from it. For people who have a short online attention span, they struggle to come up with content or design that could be understood almost immediately.

This is why as a UX UI lecturer I usually make sure that during the first sessions of this course they learn how to K.I.S.S (Keep it simple stupid). Once they understand the basic principles of UX UI, and how to win an audience, they can start designing websites and mobile apps in a professional way. Since I am also a web design lecturer, I help students launch their websites and start their own online ventures!

User Experience & Interface

As a UX UI Lecturer, I always help students to come up with disruptive ideas and innovative concepts. In an industry where ideas have to be pitched to clients and executed by third-parties (agencies, developers,etc..) a clear and effective communication is the key to the successful completion of a creative project.

For this course I separate my students in groups. Each group has to come up with a concept for a website and overlook its design and execution by another group. In order for them to improve their drafting skills, the groups were only allowed to communicate their concept and final product expectations by written in a concise manner with a product brief, as a brand would do with an agency.

Once the concept was clear enough, the students started working on a website layout taking into consideration basics of UX & UI  (user experience and user interface). They had to define their website’s target audience, the navigation process , the content and, the calls-for-action.

Mobile App Design UX UI Lecturer

After defining the business idea, the first thing I ask my students is to gather data from their target audience. Through the help of Google Forms or Survey Monkey, they can ask the right questions in order to understand the user’s persona and behavior.

Once they have enough information, they can prioritize it and start wire-framing a prototype for a mobile application. Then, they will design a low-fidelity prototype using Adobe XD. At every step, they will ask the audience to review it by sending a link where the users can actually interact with the app. Once the application has a positive feedback they will design a final high-fidelity prototype which will be their product launch.

In this example the student’s app makes it easy for the user to follow his/her fitness program by booking in advance gym classes and equipment.

Website design

During the first part of the web design course, after explaining the basics of UX UI I train my students to use Adobe XD. Once they are done prototyping their website we move to WordPress. Using a fully customizable theme it becomes very easy for them to port their design onto WordPress.

After the training the students are able to create the following:

  • SEO-friendly content pages, contact page
  • Woocommerce shop including the company’s products
  • Animated Revolution slider
  • Interactive promotional pop-up
  • Widget areas (footer, menus and sidebars)
  • GDPR cookies opt-in and Terms and Conditions page
  • Google Analytics codes / WebMaster tools / Facebook pixel

Once the programme is completed, many of my students found a vocation and actually start designing websites! As a web design lecturer there is nothing more rewarding than creating a vocation!
